Layering is an art form I haven’t yet mastered, but the founding principles are simple when you want to layer your clothes for seasonal temperatures.
You know, those in between days, like this one pictured below, where you could either go with the cardigan or without. I think we’ve been spoiled this year with warm fall days, but the English girl inside me loves to layer and feel cozy regardless of the warmth.

Layer Your Clothes With Light Fabrics
First tip, layer your clothes using light fabrics on top of your base piece. The cardigan I have on below I’ll link HERE is a light open front knit that doesn’t keep me too warm and adds zero bulk.
Light Fabrics:
- Linen
- Silk
- Chiffon
Light fabrics don’t weigh down any other layers you’re wearing and keep you cool, so when it’s a warm fall day you can feel seasonally dressed without the added warmth.
Layer Your Clothes Like An Onion
Think of your outfit like an onion, the outermost layer is the thickest, and the closer you get to the core, ask the base piece, the thinner the layer.
I’m wearing Encircled Everyday Boxy Tee here which is made of Lyocell and Organic Cotton which means it’s breathable and thin, parts of the tee are almost translucent which is perfect for layering. I love this one as a base layer.

Consider Colour
When you layer your clothes you tend to do so with everything matching, right? And when you shop colour plays a huge role in how versatile and timeless your pieces are.

So when you layer an outfit, having complimentary colours helps not only create a cohesive outfit but also gives you more options in the long run. The same can be said for patterns.
That’s why having a wardrobe full of colours that go together saves so much time, energy, and money.
Here I layered earthy tones which all compliment one another: Cream, hunter green and brown.
Keep Bulky Pieces On Their Own
If you have a bulky piece like a thick knit leave it on its own, add a jacket or coat over top and be done with it.
I would suggest not layering bulky pieces with more than one other piece to prevent discomfort, and over-warming.

Consider Cut and Length
I think this goes without saying, consider the length of each layer to avoid a disproportionate outfit. You can have the longest piece at the outer layer, or the inner layer and same with the shortest it doesn’t really matter as long as it flows.
I find having too many layers the same length can add to bulk.
A Final Note
Layering is a great way to get new outfits out of your existing wardrobe, by layering different pieces together your look will be totally different from the next.
