The Best Denim Shorts For Your Summer Capsule Wardrobe

Do you struggle with finding denim shorts that fit properly but are also comfortable, stylish and timeless? I used to hate wearing denim because I could never seem to find a pair that checked off all of those boxes, but with a bit of research, trial and error, and many online reviews, I’ve rounded up some of the industries most sought after styles, year after year, that you can add to your summer capsule wardrobe. 

I live by the rule of thumb that if the majority of my favourite brands carry these denim styles they must be good. Anthropologie for example carries Agolde and Mother denim, with a strict policy on what brands they carry you know they’re good. Now think versatility and style without compromising on quality and practicality. I’ve kept those key elements in mind when putting together this list, we don’t want denim shorts we can’t wear all day every day and feel good in.

Agolde Denim Shorts

Firstly are the Dee Super High Rise denim shorts from Agolde. These are my personal favourite since the quality is unbeatable, the style is classic, and they are incredibly versatile. Out of all of the denim I’ve tried these fit the most seamlessly into my summer capsule wardrobe since most of what I wear during the summer months pair perfectly with the distressed yet classic style.

The Dee Super High Rise are my personal favourite to wear with just about anything. The length is the perfect balance between not too short and not too long so they don’t look like bermuda or booty shorts. I love the sexy slits up the side and they fit snug in the front thigh which I like as it adds a but of silhouette definition.

Everlane Denim Shorts

Everlane is the ultimate brand for minimalist basics, I’ve linked a few of their best styles below to shop. Everlane offers a more put together denim look but with a cool distressed features throughout most of their denim pieces. Their classic styles are perfect for casual meetings, summer days out with girlfriends, and family dinners.

I would have to say if you’re new to denim shorts or just sick of the uncomfortable options out there this brand is for you. Any of these styles linked are true summer staples. These denim shorts are an easy, slightly relaxed fit and a raw hem that can be worn two ways, rolled up or unrolled.

If you create a capsule wardrobe for every season you’ll love Everlane’s styles since they’re so simple and versatile. Think plain white tees and tank tops paired with basically any of their denim shorts for a beach or everyday look.

Madewell

The Relaxed Denim Shorts by Madewell are a great every day short.

Slouchy and relaxed, these tomboy jean shorts sit lower on the hips for a laid-back feel. Destructed hems give them a perfectly worn-in look.

These would be perfect for beach days, picnics, walking the dog or just running errands.

Madewell has a huge denim following, the rumour is once you try Madewell denim you never go back. The brand overall is a mix between Anthropologie and Everlane so I can see why their denim is so loved. The fit and styles are made for living in without compromising on the quality luxury denim provides. Plus they look amazing with sandals.

Levis

The Short by Levis Redone is a bit pricey but for good reason so if you have the extra cash to spare these are for you. Like all Levi’s denim these will last a lifetime and feature a mid rise, relaxed fit throughout, and raw hem.

Reconstructed from vintage Levi’s, this jean is a rigid 100% cotton denim. The Short was upcycled in downtown Los Angeles, and is quickly becoming a cult favourite.

If you’re going for that LA cool girl look these are for you. Effortless but packed with a whole lot of value at a higher price point these would be one of those pieces I consider a bit more high end when it comes to denim. The thing with Levi’s is they’re indestructible, so you’ll basically have them forever.

Anthropologie Denim Shorts (Various Brands)

Anthropologie is the quintessential spring and summer boho vibe brand, if that’s the look you’re going for. They also carry the most amazing denim all under one roof. So you can shop several brands at once and not have to receive a 5 different packages to your doorstep. It’s pretty convenient. I’ve rounded up a few top rated styles that will take you through the season and into many more to come.

How Should Denim Shorts Fit

Gone are the days of booty shorts. As I get older I want my denim shorts to be mid thigh, not too tight and a mid to high rise. The higher the rise the loose I prefer them, so I go up a size. I tend to go up a size normally in denim shorts for a more relaxed, comfortable look.

If you want a classic look make sure your denim shorts aren’t too long, mid calf is best, and not too short as that can be uncomfortable when moving around. A medium wash is also the most versatile when it comes to colour, you’ll be able to wear them into fall without looking too summery.
