What is Minimalist Makeup

Minimalist makeup is the art of wearing less makeup and instead enhancing your natural features using simple, purposeful products.

How to Do Minimalist Makeup

Pick a handful of products you simply can’t live without and use them to enhance your features, this means using less physical product on your face and minimizing the amount of products used. For example, I use foundation, mascara, a brow product, blush, and a lip product. This allows me to hit every part of my face, face, eyes, brows, and lips.

This look is perfect for all year but specifically the summer months when I’m looking for a minimal summer makeup routine.

Minimalist Makeup Routine- Merit Beauty

Merit beauty is owned by Katherine Power, is clean and cruelty free, and based on the value of more with less. The collection consists of 7 products aimed at enhancing your natural features, the products are buildable and subtle but impactful. Here is my routine using 6 of the 7 products.

Minimalist perfecting complexion stick

I start with my face, covering only what needs to be covered so blemishes or any discolouring. I use the Merit beauty brush for seamless blending, but we’ll talk about that later. This product is amazing. It’s not a foundation or concealer but it will replace both in your makeup routine. Available in a vast array of shades anyone can find their perfect match. It’s lightweight, hydrating and just overall lovely.

I can’t say enough good things about the minimalist perfecting complexion stick. Where has this product been all my life? Forget foundation and concealer, this works as a spot treatment meaning areas on your face won’t be covered in product leaving a natural look. You can actually see your skin, it’s lovely. Let’s stop completely covering our faces please.

The packaging might be my favourite part, so sleek and fun to apply. Easy and precise application, I will never not have this product in my makeup rotation. It’s also small and sleek enough to throw in your bag and take with you for touchups on the go.

Flush balm cheek

I then move onto cheek, adding colour right on the apples and high points. Blending it in with my fingers. If you have a hard time finding the right blush for you, or don’t love blush in the first place this product will change your mind. The flush balm cheek colour is a cream tint that melts into the skin, it provides a touch of colour without covering the skins texture. Leaving a balmy hydrated finish, in a fun circular shape.

One of my favourite products to use physically, the oval shape makes it really easy to apply naturally since the apples of your cheeks are round. I love how natural the finish is and how it doesn’t need to be perfect, you can blend it in with your fingers and it looks incredible. I have shade Soft Peach.

Day Glow Dewy Highlight Balm

In shade Cava- Champagne add a few swipes of this onto your cheeks to add dimension and glow. I can’t skip this part of the routine or else my skin doesn’t feel nearly as radiant, its sheer lightweight formula adds a light coverage without any sparkle so you can build the glow throughout your day.

Lash lengthening mascara

I then move onto eyes, adding 3-4 coats of the Lash Lengthening Mascara as I like a bold lash. This lash lengthening mascara tints, lengthens, and lifts lashes with no smudging or flaking. The brush is a super simple puffy brush made to distribute product evenly. It’s made from plant derived rice bran wax making it so easy to get off at the end of the day, there’s nothing worse than mascara that won’t come off.

I’ve tried a lot of mascaras in my lifetime and this one is in my top 5, it’s not fussy perfect for everyday and easy to remove. I like how easy the application is and the brush is simple to distribute product evenly. When it comes to packaging the lash lengthening mascara tube is sleek and well made. Love.

Brow 1980

Then comes bows to finish off the eye area, 2 quick brushes of this through the brows is all you need. If you’re looking to fluffy natural looking brows with a little elevation this is the product to achieve just that. Think 80’s style effortless brows meets the shape and structure of the 21st century. The formula contains kaolin clay, is mineral based, includes vitamin B5, is a light pomade that adds a bit of colour while maintaining your natural brow shape, and is super buildable.

I love that this product is so easy to use and takes 5 seconds to apply, I use this when I want simple brows with minimal effort involved. I have light brows so I chose the blonde shade and it matches perfectly. Since working from home this makeup look has been my go-to.

Shade Slick tinted lip oil

Finally, finish the look off with a nice lip. Infused with roseship oil and omega 3,6, and 9 for a sheer tint of colour that’s in between an oil and a stain. Shea butter and grapeseed oil help nourish the lips while jojoba oil protects.

The great thing about this product is that if you’re not looking for full colour and want just a little touch of natural colour this product will give you that. I like to use it if I’m going for a really natural sun kissed look, or if I want to accentuate other areas of my face like the eyes and face this product doesn’t take away from that. The colour range is small but beautiful and the product isn’t sticky at all.

Merit beauty brush

Finally the amazing Merit beauty brush. I’ve been slowly building my beauty brushes collection, so it basically only consists of quality brushes that do the most. This one is perfect to use with the complexion stick, it’s soft and angled so it reaches every area of your face with ease.

The bristles are densely packed and leave behind no product unblended. It’ also super small and compact so you can travel easily with it. I use this brush for face only and it helps blend and Crete a great base for other products.

I love hearing about clean makeup products that actually work! I’m currently transitioning all my hair, body and makeup products to clean products and it’s a slow rollover, but will be worth it. Will have to check out Merit.
