Garment care is super important when it comes to lengthening the life of your clothing. It’s like anything really, you take care of something, it thrives. We talk a lot about what garments to choose for your wardrobe and how to style them, but what do you do once you have these clothes? Well, in this post we’re going to answer all of your frequently asked questions about garment care so your clothes can live a long and prosperous life.

How Do You Take Care Of Garments

How you take care of garments varies from piece to piece. This means you have to find out what process the specific piece of clothing requires. Garment care relies on how you wash something, store it, wear it, and handle it.

In order to properly take care of your garments look at the material the clothing is made from, this way you can figure out how to properly take care of it. See the examples below.

  • Denim is made from a strong blend of cotton, elastane and another synthetic fabric using a twill weave. Wash on cold inside out to prevent fading, use a mild detergent and hang dry. We RARELY wash our denim, you don’t really need to unless it’s actually dirty
  • Silk is made from a natural fibre so attention must be paid. It is naturally strong, absorbent and flexible. Wash on cold and hang dry as this material shrinks easily. Store in a cool, dry place. Be delicate when wearing it!
  • Cotton is an easy to care for fabric, wash in cold or warm water and either hang to dry or dry on a low heat setting. Ironing can be avoided if you hang to dry or remove from the dryer immediately. Otherwise, iron when the garment is still damp. Storage is flexible and you don’t have to be careful with handling this type of garment
  • Linen can be washed on a low temperature with a mild detergent. It gets softer with wear but absorbs everything so be careful. Read the garments care instructions before hand as linen varies according to brand
  • Polyester is a synthetic fabric that can be washed easily with warm or cool water. You can hang dry or throw it in the dryer on low heat. If it smells you can simply air it out to dry. You can pretreat stains easily as well which is a nice bonus
  • Wool is an antibacterial fabric so it doesn’t need to be washed often, but when needed it can be washed cold on a gentle cycle. Use a delicate detergent and store folded.

Other key garment care tips:

  • Store your knitwear folded in bins to prevent stretching, stay away from hangers
  • Denim and pants can be hung or folded but try to not use clasps to hang as they can add denting and distortion to the top of your pants
  • Only wash when necessary, you don’t need to wash your clothing after every use (undergarments and gym wear yes, but not everyday clothing)
  • Use a fabric shaver like the ones linked below when or if any pilling occurs
