My Quick Hair Care Routine + Tips For Long Hair

Share if you like this post!

Here’s my hair care routine plus the tips I live by to achieve long healthy hair. I’ll link all of the products I use below and include a quick hair care and styling tutorial.

My most frequently asked question is and always has been “What’s Your Hair Care Routine?”, and not just from friends but from everyone under the sun. The ironic thing is, I don’t blog or talk about hair much, it’s not something I have a passion for or interest in. But I do want to answer your questions so I’m putting it all here for you!

What’s Your Hair Care Routine?

Here’s a step by step weekly routine starting with Thursday.

Thursday

  • Shampoo and condition
  • Towel dry
  • Add a hair oil from ears down by adding product to my palms, warming it up and squeezing into hair
  • Brush with a natural bamboo thick paddle brush
  • Let hair dry for 24 hours

Friday

  • Leave alone for a full day so hair can fully dry and lay naturally

Saturday morning

  • Curl using 1/2 inch hair wand (see tutorial below)
  • Spray with hairspray
  • Leave curls, don’t brush them through, they last longer this way
  • Saturday evening the curls have dropped and hair looks wavy just in time for a night out with girlfriends

Sunday-Wednesday

  • Leave alone, I let the curls do their thing. They become beachier and more natural as the days progress

Thursday evening

  • Repeat

I also want to note I have my hair cut once or twice a year usually asking for 3 inches cut from the bottom and layers with a bit of blonde balayage style added in for dimension. I like to use a scalp scrub once a month to help break down any buildup, this might not be ideal for everyone so do whatever works for your hair type.

The shortest I’ve ever gone is just below my shoulders, I’ll leave a photo below, and it took a full two years for it to grow to where it’s at today, in the video below.

I’ll add a PIN below so you can save it to your board and refer back to this routine.

This routine works for me, it might not work for you and that’s okay. I have natural coarse, dry thick hair so it doesn’t get greasy throughout the week. This schedule might not work for you, you might need to repeat the routine every 3 days instead and thats okay. Partly why I’m so hesitant to share my hair care routine is because of this reason, but you can edit the schedule and stick to the steps.

I don’t blow dry my hair because it just takes too long and I hate spending time in the bathroom drying it, I’ve been air drying my hair for so long it’s used to it and dries perfectly naturally. But it did take some time to get there. My mindset is, why blow dry it when it doesn’t make much of a difference?

What Should I Include in my Hair Care Routine?

These are the products I use and have used for awhile:

  • Drugstore shampoo and conditioner, nothing fancy literally whatever’s on sale
  • A bamboo hairbrush, they’re gentler than plastic
  • Hair oil, I love Ouai but have ben using Gisou lately
  • A 1/2 inch wand, mine is from winners but I’ll link a few below
  • Scrunchies, never use hair elastics as they will break your hair something fierce
  • Hair spray, again anything that’s on sale

And that’s it!

Daily Hair Care Routine

Leave your hair alone, I’m not kidding. The more you mess with it the more it will break, won’t grow, and you’ll be frustrated. I never brush my hair unless its tangly and use hair clips in case I need it out of my face.

Products Used

  • Shampoo and Conditioner (drug store and it’s forever changing)
  • Gisou Hair Oil but I prefer Ouai Hair Oil
  • Bamboo Hair Brush
  • Curling Wand
  • Hairspray

I don’t take any supplements but I’ve hears good things about this one from Nature’s Bounty.

Long Hair Care Tips

My top tips for growing long, healthy hair:

  • Stop playing around with it so much
  • Only dye it if you have to (I have an ombre and get it touched up once a year, because the style means roots are essential this is fine)
  • Don’t use boxed dye, invest in a good hair stylist
  • Use scrunchies NOT elastics!!! Elastics will break your hair
  • Spend more money on hair serums and oils, and NOT on shampoo. Shampoo is washed away faster than you can say Bobs your uncle
  • Use heat tools as little as possible
  • Opt for hair clips instead of elastic bands if you want your hair out of your face
  • Hair gummies for growth are always a good idea

That’s it! I hope this post helped, let me know if you’d like me to add anything or if you have any other questions!
